The "Mémorial de Caen" commemorates the thousands of victims of World War II, both, soldiers and civilians, who died in the Battle of Normandy in 1944. It is dedicated to the history of violence and intensive, outstanding conflicts in the 20th Century. In its function as a peace center, it wants to transport as a basic idea the "spirit of reconciliation". The inscription on the building's facade by the local poet Paul Dorey says: "The pain broke me, the fraternity relieved me, of my wound sprang a river of freedom“. The sculpture "Non-violence" in front of the entrance, a pistol with a knot in the barrel, by Swedish artist Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd speaks: "Peace! Diplomacy instead of weapon deliveries!“

Das „Mahnmal von Caen“ erinnert an die Tausenden Opfer des Zweiten Weltkriegs, Soldaten und Zivilisten, die 1944 in der Schlacht um die Normandie starben. Es ist der Geschichte der Gewalt und der intensiven, herausragenden Konflikte im 20. Jahrhundert gewidmet. In seiner Funktion als Friedenszentrum will es als Grundidee den „Geist der Versöhnung“ transportieren. Die Inschrift an der Fassade des Gebäudes vom lokalen Dichter Paul Dorey lautet: „Der Schmerz brach mich, die Brüderlichkeit befreite mich, aus meiner Wunde entsprang ein Fluss der Freiheit“. Die Skulptur „Gewaltlosigkeit“ vor dem Eingang, eine Pistole mit einem Knoten im Lauf, des schwedischen Künstlers Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd spricht: „Frieden! Diplomatie statt Waffenlieferungen!“
