Chief Seattle

1786-1866, was an Indian chief of the Suquamish and Duwamish tribes. In order to protect his people, Chief See-ahth, or better known as Chief Seattle pursued a strategy of adapting to the white settlers and even had himself baptized as a Catholic. However, he refused to lead his tribes into a reservation. Chief Seattle became famous for his so-called "millennium speech", which he gave around 1854 at a hearing before the governor of the Washington Territory when it came to selling the land on which his tribes lived. A central point of the speech is the importance of land for the Indians' ancestral and death cult: "How can I sell you land? Mother Earth belongs to all of us. Every part of this land is sacred to my people." The speech became popular in the 1970s. It fascinated many people and gained great importance for the environmental movement. 2020, 137x197cm

1786-1866, war ein indianischer Häuptling der Stämme Suquamish und Duwamish. Um sein Volk zu schützen, verfolgte er eine Strategie der Anpassung an die weißen Siedler und ließ sich sogar katholisch taufen. Er weigerte sich aber sie in ein Reservat zu führen. Bekannt wurde Häuptling Seattle durch seine sogenannte „Jahrtausend-Rede“, die er um 1854 bei einer Anhörung vor dem Gouverneur des Washington-Territoriums hielt, als es darum ging das Land zu verkaufen, auf dem seine Stämme lebten. Ein zentraler Punkt der Rede ist die Bedeutung des Landes für den Ahnen- und Totenkult der Indianer: „Wie kann ich Ihnen Land verkaufen? Mutter Erde gehört uns allen. Jeder Teil dieses Landes ist meinem Volk heilig.“ Ab den 1970er Jahren wurde die Rede populär. Sie faszinierte viele Menschen und gewann starke Bedeutung für die Umweltbewegung. 2020, 137x197cm
